Maybe your more into having just a simple Water garden without Koi and enjoy the Aquatic plant life that this system supports. In which case much less filtration is needed due to the balance of plants and small fish,frogs,snails and many other creatures that come when you build it.
Both are enjoyble... but both are different lets look at the difference:
We define a Dedicated Koi Pond™
As a pond that contains Koi only and no rocks or gravel, or any plants. Riverine creatures like Koi naturally exist in large bodies of fresh, moving water. Generally speaking these bodies of water are relatively free of any of the aquatic plants found in a typical water garden because deep, moving water and plants don't peacefully coexist. These same waterways are also generally devoid of rocks, being lined instead with alluvial soils and clay. That is the environment they were designed by nature to thrive in. A Koi Pond must properly be defined as a pond constructed specifically for Koi. All design elements in a Koi Pond are for the Koi and about the Koi. The needs of the Koi define the pond in every way.
The equipment that is used in a Dedicate Koi Pond™
is more elaborate then what is needed to maintain a Water Garden Pond. Below is a list of some of the suggested equipment needed to properly support Koi.
- Bottom Aerated Drain(s)
- Skimmer(s)
- TPR’s (Tangential Port Returns)
- Air Pump(s)
- Settling Chamber(s) or
- Vortex Chamber(s)
- Biological Filtration
- External Pump(s)
- UV(s)
Water gardens, also known as aquatic gardens, backyard ponds and garden ponds, have become popular in recent years.
Usually referring to a man-made feature, these gardens typically combine a pool with aquatic plants and often ornamental fish. Fixed items such as rocks, fountains, statuary, waterfalls and watercourses can be combined with the pool to add visual interest and integration with the local landscape and environment. Most of theses also have various size pebbles and rocks stacked on the walls, along with gravel covering liner.
Water gardens also have a variety of aquatic plants, which can range from Lily’s to Cannas,Taro,Iris. Also floating plants as Duck weed, Water Lettuce an assorted other varities. All of these will be picked on by Large Koi, we suggest other types of aquatic fish such as Goldfish, Black Mollies, and Paradise fish. The reasons we tend not to lean toward Koi are they grow up 30” and need deep water to thrive. Also require a more advanced filtration system then what is required for a simple water garden.
Suggested equipment list for a Water Garden are:

- Skimmer-(Leave net, filter pad)
- Submersible Pump
With a Water Garden if the fish load is kept at a 30% to 70% plants a balance will be play. It is recommended that these type systems only be cleaned once a year! We feel that there should be maintained during the whole year not just once a year clean-out.
