I feel that this a misconception, based on my experience over the last 20 yrs working with ponds and Aeromonas break outs. I will explain my experience and what I feel is the cause of the out breaks.

The bacteria does enter the Koi through Gill flukes and flukes via the skin(under scales ect) liken it to mosquito's injecting malaria in humans. Also don't forget it is in the water all the time. If Koi should be scraped or injury on a sharp object then the immune layer of slime is breached it to can allow bacteria in.

The slime coat that you feel on the Koi is its defense to these types of attacks by bacteria ect. If conditions are poor(water quality) this may breech this defense. This is one reason salt is used it cause a heavier slime coat due to irritation to the skin. And if used in the right format then it can also have range of kill power to some parasites.........providing there not already non-sensitive to salt.

Yes....Water quality is the main factor. You may not like this answer but, it has to do with water quality of course the higher quality the better odds. Aeromonas bacteria counts will be lower and thus allows the Koi immune system to have a better chance to fight it off. If Koi is in a stressed environment the lower the immune status and if bacteria count is high then the odds are koi will get dosed.

You can download and add to it if there are things not listed you may use. This is just an template to get you started.

Its best to think ahead and have this list of items around. Thus not having to scramble at the last minute looking for items or a weekend.

Even for us seasoned ponders it can act as a quick reminder.

Preparing for spring

Well spring is just around the corner folks....as a matter of fact I see spring walking this way right now!

Every pond keeper and Koi keeper can't wait for spring after a hard winter, some less harsh then others some darn brutal!

Here in San Diego we don't have a real four season type year, either were hot or were cold. Very short in between weather changes, spring season and fall season. Most overall water temp is in the mid 40's to low 50's depending on what part of county you reside. To sum it up were in ideal wintering conditions and don't have a need to heat/cover our ponds.

For some of you will need to take some extra steps in wintering your Koi over. One is to cover your pond and use a heating system of some sort. You also want to keep your system online while doing this. Here again you will stop feeding at around 50 and keep the temperature around the 45-48 degree range, and maintain this for the next 6-10 week period.

Over the course of one year, your utility will track the amount of electricity your system has fed into the grid and use this credit to offset the costs of power purchased from the utility when your system does not generate electricity, i.e. cloudy days or at night.

Server security is very poor. Due to the resigning of many KHA's in the AKCA program last month, we at this time don't have a current list of KHA's that are active at this time. As soon as we do we will list the current KHA's if and when it is provided to us.

It would be best at this time to contact your local Koi club to find a current(Active)KHA.
